How Netflix teaches streamers about the NFL by positional groups

Last summer we were introduced to the QB position. This summer we learn about the WR position, and its importance between the NFL and Netflix moving forward. What’s next July?
Next summer we could learn more about the RB position. That’s a moving target. Why is the streaming giant so invested in the NFL suddenly? Edutainment matters globally.
Netflix had around 269.6 million paid subscribers worldwide as of the first quarter of 2024. This marked an increase of over nine million subscribers compared with the previous quarter. Most Netflix subscribers are based in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), accounting for more than 91 million of Netflix’s total global subscriber base. Via Statista
This holiday season many of you will watch 2 NFL games on Netflix. That’s if you’re a Chiefs, Steelers, Ravens, or Texans fan.
The NFL’s “next frontier for growth” was “undoubtedly reflected” in the three-year agreement struck with Netflix to carry games on Christmas. THE ATHLETIC’s Tom Burrows wrote Netflix has “continued its foray into live sports broadcasting” with its NFL games on Christmas Day, a move “that has shifted the dial and highlights how streamers are now targeting live sport as a way to retain subscribers” in what is “becoming an increasingly crowded field.”
The NFL is not trying to drive Netflix subscription numbers up. They do a great job on their own with that. They’re penetrating a new subscriber base. The NFL game and brand can grow more globally now as a result.
After retiring from the Navy in 2016 I sold cable and internet for almost 3 years with Comcast Xfinity on foot in Gig Harbor, WA. I was paying attention to my competition at the door. Until I had to pivot ahead of the pandemic. Cable is dead now. Follow the money they said.
EDUTAINMENT
This is not a lame ‘Gotcha” attempt either. More like sports ‘Edutainment” if you will. Similar to how Netlfix positioned both QB and WR groups. What’s next? The RB group? No, more of America’s Team on Netflix plus Tyson Vs Paul at AT&T Stadium in November. Go figure.
The upcoming documentary series by the Emmy-winning directors of Wild Wild Country and Untold will tell the story of how “America’s Team” established a legacy.
