Can You Hear Me Now?

Paul Marcarelli used to be in the Verizon commercials up until 2011 always asking somebody on the other end, “Can you hear me now?” Remember him? At times he embodies exactly how I feel when talking with my kids during virtual classes.

I’m the one who has trouble hearing due to the constant loud ringing in between my ears. Not my children. Oh well, allow me to introduce you to my friend tinnitus. Despite having selective hearing when it came to musicians this is my way two-beat tinnitus.

This tinnitus artist is not one you can stream on and off as needed though. Many veterans who deal with tinnitus know exactly what I mean. So how do I deal with it as a writer? More on this as you continue reading.

The 10% disability given by the VA for tinnitus is bullshit. Tinnitus itself triggers other conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD too. If only others could understand that our pain is invisible. And difficult to hear with.

When we Bluetooth the recently increased state isolation restrictions deaths continue to spike across the country. The veteran noise gets louder. In addition, limited in-person appointments with the VA to see counselors aren't helping us virtually either. What gives for veterans to survive now despite…
