NBA All-Star Weekend will feature LED glass courts that display video graphics.

Wooden Glass

The NBA is a star-driven league. Now that the NFL season concluded it’s time to move to the hardwood, or glass for that matter until June. For the first time, an LED glass court was on display. Giving basketball fans a new game-changing experience. With moving 3-point lines and all.

The court, developed by the German company ASB GlassFloor, has been used in events by FIBA, the sport’s governing body. FIBA approved the usage of LED glass flooring at top-tier competitions in 2022. The league didn’t reveal what the court costs, other than it’s more expensive than a wood surface.

The NBA has been considering ways to use the product for some time. Andre Iguodala of the National Basketball Players Association and Joe Dumars, the NBA’s executive vice president for basketball operations, experimented on the court last week to check how it plays and whether it’s safe.

The court itself is two layers of laminated safety glass, each five millimeters thick, the NBA said. The surface is opaque, and all the designs will be provided by the LED panels. Courts will have a different look for each event — and part of what’ll be displayed are real-time game stats, replays, video content, and even player tracking animations.

Micah Parsons NBA NFL Celebrity All Star Game Lucas Oil Stadium
Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons claimed the MVP award of the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game as he led Team Shannon Sharpe to victory. ESPN credited Parsons with 37 points on 17-for-31 shooting and said he had 16 rebounds and four steals in the win.

MVP Micah

Leave it to delusional Dallas Cowboys fans complaining on social media that the Lion would get injured playing basketball tonight. Wrong. Just because he is an NFL player he can live his life how he sees fit. Not how you think he should.

I have not watched much NBA this season. The NBA knew by putting Micah in their Celebrity All-Star Game that Cowboys fans like myself might be more inclined to tune in. It worked. It served as a dual purpose to tune in. It provided a content grab for one. Secondly, I support my Cowboys in all their efforts.

ESPN is not slick either. Earlier today it was reported that Stephen A. Smith was crossed over by the Lion during practice. Sending him to the hospital to wear a boot as a result. He looked fine tonight and had no boot on either. This was creating controversy to garner more views on the day of the game. I play the game with the best of them.

New reader here? How did you like the LED court experience? I feel it added a new dimension to cater to the younger tech types. Will the NBA use this LED court more in 2024? Follow me on Medium today. Only time will tell. Micah showed us tonight why he’s the King of the LED Jungle. The first MVP on a glass court.
