Only 3 Dallas Cowboys players were ever picked first in the NFL Draft

How driven will the “Draft Whisperer” be with 7 picks in the Motor City?

Since the NFL Draft began in 1961 the Dallas Cowboys have picked first only 3 out of 62 times. Can you name all 3 players and which year they were drafted?

DALLAS DRAFT HISTORY

The first quarter of this calendar year has concluded. Now we enter into April. The NFL Draft month. This year’s draft will take place in Detroit where the Cowboys will be picking 24th in the first round. It’s been 32 years since the Cowboys selected Russell Maryland first off the board in 1991.

Just 2 years previous Troy Aikman came off the board first in the 1989 NFL Draft. Fifteen years previous to that Ed “Too Tall” Jones in 1974 came off the board first overall. Will the Cowboys ever pick that high again? Doubt it.

The next highest draft pick for America’s Team came in at #4 when Ezekiel Elliott came off the board in 2016. Now in 2024, the Cowboys have the 24th pick in the first round. With only 7 total picks can VP of Player Personnel Will McClay AKA the “Draft Whisperer” work his draft magic?

Since the new league year commenced the Cowboys have been quiet during Free Agency. No signs of “All In” anywhere. Thanks to the Cowboy's drafting history this is why we are currently in this salary cap pickle. Then again has Jerral gone from big spender to penny pincher?
