The microwave oven was invented accidentally when a test for a magnetron melted an engineer’s snack in 1946. Raytheon engineer Perry Spencer had a “knack for finding simple solutions to manufacturing problems,” a current engineer at the same company says. The Dallas Cowboys became an NFL team in 1960. Fifteen years earlier the microwave was invented by Perry Spencer. What’s the connection? We are currently living among Dallas Cowboys Microwave fans on social media. Nobody cooks from scratch anymore.

Percy Spencer — an American engineer — worked with Raytheon Laboratories to develop the first functional microwave oven. He worked closely with compact cavity magnetrons (a microwave oven’s core component) found in live radar sets during World War II, during which time he noticed a candy bar melting in his pocket.
