The microwave oven was invented accidentally when a test for a magnetron melted an engineer’s snack in 1946. Raytheon engineer Perry Spencer had a “knack for finding simple solutions to manufacturing problems,” a current engineer at the same company says. Today, more than 90 percent of American homes have a microwave. Image created with CANVA.

DING

The Dallas Cowboys became an NFL team in 1960. Fifteen years earlier the microwave was invented by Perry Spencer. What’s the connection? We are currently living among Dallas Cowboys Microwave fans on social media. Nobody cooks from scratch anymore.

Percy Spencer — an American engineer — worked with Raytheon Laboratories to develop the first functional microwave oven. He worked closely with compact cavity magnetrons (a microwave oven’s core component) found in live radar sets during World War II, during which time he noticed a candy bar melting in his pocket.

He went on to experiment with the compact cavity magnetron tube, directing it towards other foods like eggs and popcorn as he built a metal box and door to contain the microwaves emitted by the tube.

By the late 1990s, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nine of every ten American homes owned a microwave oven. The earliest residential countertop microwaves operated with just 115 watts of power according to MAYTAG.

Are you the type of Dallas Cowboys fan who approaches their team like their supper?

Four Course Meal

The four-course meal consists of a soup, an appetizer, an entrée, and dessert. Thanks to technology the human attention span is less than a Gold Fish. This is where the microwave effect with NFL fans goes DING. Nobody cooks from scratch anymore it seems.

The average attention span for the notoriously ill-focused goldfish is nine seconds…
