In the early 17th century (as school slang, in the sense ‘Friday on which an examination is held’). The shopping sense dates from the 1960s and was originally used with reference to congestion created by shoppers; it was later explained as a day when retailers’ accounts went from being “in the red” to “in the black.”

Any Given Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday. Three NFL games are slated for the holiday today and then tomorrow we will see the New York Jets host the Miami Dolphins on Amazon Prime at Metlife Stadium. The first-ever Black Friday NFL game. What do you think happens next? Well, when the largest retail giant teams up with the NFL it just makes cents.

What is this day all about and where did it originate from? The name Black Friday is also used to refer to September 24, 1869, the date of a financial panic in the US sparked by gold speculators.

First recorded in 1865–70; from black in the sense “marked by disaster or misfortune”; the 1951 sense “day after Thanksgiving” originally so called from the troublesome traffic caused by shoppers and later re-explained with reference to the use of black ink to record business profits.

Having 4 out of 5 NFL games over the holiday weekend means food, family, and football. The perfect time of year. After each Thanksgiving in my home, our Daughter helps assemble the Christmas Tree and hang the stockings.
