What is vertical integration?

The combination in one company of two or more stages of production normally operated by separate companies. In the oil industry, for example, the process that takes the oil from the well to the service station is divided into four stages — crude oil production, transportation, refining, and marketing.

Oil industry vertical integration was pioneered by John D. Rockefeller in the late 19th century to create Standard Oil. This company controlled 85 percent of the U.S. oil industry until 1911, when it was broken up into smaller companies under antitrust legislation and a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.
